This paper is about the organised development of urban clusters in the framework of relevant theories and principles that have been formulated since the Second World War and with emphasis on the structure of land uses. The investigation of the issue is based on the presentation and examination of three case studies (CityNord, Steilshoop and HafenCity) in the framewok of the general planning for the city of Hamburg. Among other, issues related to the evolution of views and objectives for urban development, the essential planning options and mechanisms for them, the related planning tools, and the anticipated results and benefits for city are examined. Finally, some initial critical evaluation of the related projects is attempted.
