Patent activity in Greece: geographical and technological patterns

Abstract

The paper is a first approach towards the examination of the overall pattern of patent activities in Greece, their technological content, based on particular technology fields and their geographical distribution across regions. It focuses on firm patent activities, classifying them by technology and industrial sectors. Empirical work reveals that technology/innovation is more concentrated than production, both at the national and sectoral levels. At the same time, the most innovative regions are the same regions, in which most of the production is generated. Innovation and production patterns differ across sectors on country level, suggesting that industry specific and country specific conditions determine the spatial pattern of innovation and production.
