Abstract

In this article, the migration and the relevant theoretical approaches, which interpret the phenomenon, are described as well as the driving factors, which influence and shape the size of migration, are analyzed. Then, an econometric model is proposed in order to estimate the degree of influence and the importance of each driving factor for the configuration of number of migrants in Greece. Moreover, a classification of migrants in Greece in relation to the origin country is fulfilled and both the migrants’ spatial distribution in the Greek prefectures and the correlation of per capita migrants with economic and other characteristics in each Greek prefecture are estimated. Also, both the prefectures of destination depending on the country of migrants’ origin and the countries of migrants’ origin depending on the rate of their employment in the sectors of Greek economy are categorized. Finally, the conclusions based on the analysis, which is preceded, are formulated.
