In an era where many cities compete with each other, the imitation and implementation of successful design examples is frequently observed through the world. This fact is based on the idea that the way squares function is the same everywhere because it is a direct result of the human needs which are the same regardless of the place, culture and natural conditions. However, the opposite view could be a valid opinion. This dilemma comprised the trigger for the realization of the present study, whose aim is the correlation of the way that urban squares function in two different countries. The research question aimed to be answered was: How people use the urban squares in medium size cities in the UK and in Greece and why? Larisa and Nottingham were chosen as case studies. Using qualitative data collection methods, it was concluded that although human needs (communication, relaxation, recreation, etc) are the same everywhere, parameters like weather, culture and history are significant to everyday people’s actions. Thus, adoption of specific successful ideas in other places is something realistic that may be successful only by paying attention to the application of the “foreign” elements according to the special characteristic of the place.
