Abstract

The European Union’s enlargement towards South-East Europe led to the formation of a common policy framework towards the promotion of socio-economic convergence of the 12  new member-states emphasizing on the role of the transportation system. In the context of the current paper a system of indicators is developed and applied for the assessment of the SE Europe transportation system in relation to the European Union’s development policies. The above analysis indicates in most of the cases significantly low levels of mobility for the new member-states in comparison to the rest of the member-states but also highlights a series of prospects that could act as competitive advantages towards the future development of the enlargement countries and could contribute to the promotion of sustainable mobility in the European Union.
