Abstract

The present Landscape Architecture study which was conducted during research activities in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is dealing with issues of development, environmental protection and cultural enhancement of natural landscapes distinguished for their aesthetical or ecological value. In particular, it is concerned with the investigation of the potential and the prospects for development and enhancement of the forest Dragoudeli, located in a high touristic zone in north Greece, Sithonia, Halkidiki. The touristically saturated wider area seeks for new types of tourism development in order to ensure the establishment of a balance among all aspects of local society-environment, economy and culture. Within the context of a sustainable development, especially as concerns the natural protected areas, the necessity for landscape studies, during which the ecological, aesthetical and social values are equally taken into account, is crucial. In the present study, landscape is seen as a "living" space, a space of enjoyment and of social practice. Landscape analysis is based on a socio-ecological and perceptual approach in order to specify the potential, suitability, capacity and the capabilities for development of the area through alternative tourism (eco-tourism). The results of the analysis are presented in drawings, sketches, photographs and diagrams and form the basis of the design proposals which are focusing on the protection and enhancement of the forest as a whole as well as of areas of special interest destined to accommodate specific activities.
