The issue of the quality of the landscape in Greece has not been addressed satisfactorily as yet, neither at the level of academic research and governmental policies nor at that of enhancing the understanding of public opinion and the average person in the street. As elucidated by the few recent studies on the issue, the quality of a sizeable number of the most important landscapes in Greece has already undergone irreversible changes. Based on experience from Greece and abroad, the present paper focuses on the country’s periurban landscape, as being the most vulnerable to adversity and explores the way to prevent and accommodate the impact of urban sprawl.
