The paper examines marriage patterns in Greece during the 1920s, by Geographical Department and by District. The regional differences within Greece were indicative of a country that encompasses populations with different historical-cultural and economic backgrounds, some of which had only recently (in the 1920s) annexed to the Greek territory. There is a geographical gradient in the marriage pattern from North to South of Greece, with a further differentiation between mainland and insular Greece. In the northern-most Departments of the country the marriage pattern, especially that of women, resembled that of the neighboring Balkan countries, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria (early and universal marriage at least for women). Further south, age of marriage was not as early, and permanent celibacy was not uncommon for men, and in some island populations (the Ionian islands) for women as well. The 1.2 million refugees that came in the 1920s to Greece from Asia Minor, gave their own note to the marriage pattern given the great lack of men in marriageable ages.
