Political and social changes within a country affect its culture and the educational structures. In the turbulent history of Greece from the founding of the modern Greek state to the establishment of democracy in 1974, the educational structures have undergone many reforms. The first Greek illustrated children's books appeared in the mid-19th century and had an educational role. As a result, the controversy over the language issue was directly linked to the development and role of illustration in children's books. The subject matter of the books was dominated by a conservative style of writing that imposed literary didacticism and national-religious rationalism, while the illustrations were decorative. Gradually, the right conditions for writers and creators to escape conservative norms began to emerge, but the imposition of the military junta in 1967 brought another cultural regression to the country. The most important changes in children's books took place in the aftermath of the dictatorship in Greece, when the new pedagogy encouraged authors to deal with issues of contemporary reality. New illustration techniques were introduced and images began to work closely with the text, acquiring an essential role.
