Abstract

Abstract

Alki Zei, closely following the literary and social events of the time, composes a novel with socio-political, ideological, and existential references, bringing the hero face to face with the issues of school bullying, the marginalization of the homeless, racism and the refugee crisis. Each challenge for Icarus is a "plunge" into the more profound knowledge of life while mobilizing his social reflexes. Through the experience of social development, Icarus shapes his identity on his way to adulthood, while all the characters in the play are called to position themselves against social challenges. This work investigates heroes’ choices through the theoretical lens of inclusion, which dictates their choices and actions. As a result, the heroes' reactions to social problems and impasses are imbued with solidarity and humanity, promoting the acceptance of the "other" and himself. Therefore, the novel’s characters follow inclusive choices to interact with the broader social environment, as the modern educational and social needs dictate.
