Abstract

Creativity and innovation skills are considered essential for economic and social development, scientific and technological progress, entrepreneurship and sustainability, and therefore their cultivation at all levels of educa-tion is considered important. In contemporary education, the concept of creativity is perceived as the “inexhaustible source of innovation”. The purpose of the present review study was to provide a critical approach to contemporary intervention creativity programs, as detected in the educational context and in the field of physical education (PE) and sports. The delimitation of the collective data, as searched for by online databases, has been the result of research publications on creativity, over the last 20 years. Specifically, prevailing scientific viewpoints, concerning the definition, the theoretical framework, the measurements and the intervention results, regarding creative thinking, are presented. However, as indicated by the results, there are divergent opinions on the selection criteria of the appropriate program in each concept, such as the characteristics of the sample and the intervention, including the efficiency of the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the creativity. In conclusion, creativity is considered as a major driver on which contemporary school and innovative PE curriculum will be constructed. Within such a framework, the foundations of alternative learning processes and practice in physical education and sport sciences can be established.
