The lesson of Physical Education (PE) in schools has the dynamics to influence and to some degree, form the perceptions, attitudes and culture of youth towards a way of life that promote lifelong participation in physical activity, exercise and sport. In order to achieve this goal, it is crucial for students to gain knowledge for sports, satisfaction from their participation, success and enjoyment during the teaching process. According to many researchers and academics, lessons designed with Teaching Games for Understanding (TGFU) approach can positively affect students’ intrinsic motivation, corroborate tactical knowledge and sport understanding, improve game performance and facilitate knowledge transfer from one sport to another. In the last 40 years or so, many studies associated with this approach have been undertaken however, conflicting results exist on its effectiveness. The purpose of this paper is to review the studies dealing with the TGFU approach, particularly those related to primary and secondary education, in order to form an additional field of information and knowledge on the effectiveness of this teaching approach.
