Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the possible correlation between: i) physical activity participation and specific coping strategies, ii) physical activity and self-efficiency and iii) gender differences in coping strategies. Two hundred and seven university students participated in this study. The study was held through questionnaires and all scales had acceptable levels of internal consistency. The results revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between coping with stress through the positive approach and a) moderate physical activity and b) self-efficiency. The results also showed a positive correlation between
moderate and vigorous physical activity and self-efficiency in coping with stress under specific/given conditions. With regards to gender differences, it was found out that women use the positive approach and social support more, as coping strategies. The results of the study showed the relation between physical activity and stress and indicated that physical activity is a viable means of reducing stress. Innovative and effective strategies are necessary to reduce and cope with stress symptoms regarding college students.
